Salt Pond Ecosystem

The color of salt ponds range from pale green to deep coral pink, and indicate the salinity of the ponds. Microorganisms create these spectacular colors, changing their own hues in response to increasing salinity.

In low-to mid-salinity ponds, green algae proliferate and lend the water a green cast. As the salinity increases, an algae called Dunaliella out-competes other microorganisms in the pond, and the color shifts to an even lighter shade of green. In mid-salinity ponds, millions of tiny brine shrimp clarify the brine and contribute an orange cast to the water. And in mid-to high-salinity ponds, high salt concentrations actually trigger the Dunaliella to produce a red carotenoid pigment. Halophiles, such as Halobacteria and Stichococcus, also contribute red tints to the hypersaline brine.

Help Astronomers Name Pluto’s Tiniest Moons

It won’t be long before Pluto’s smallest moons, now called P4 and P5, are given names worthy of their association with the god of the underworld. And you will have a chance to vote for what you think the planetary runt’s tiniest satellites should be called.
“I really want this to be something the whole world can be involved in,” said ace moon-finder Mark Showalter, an astronomer at the SETI Institute.
Showalter and his colleagues have designed a website, translated into 12 languages, that you can use to submit votes for your favorite names. For two weeks starting today, anyone with an internet connection can choose from among a dozen names suggested by the team.
Or, if none of those names suffice, suggest your own.

71 Percent of U.S. See Humans On Mars By 2033

In the wake of the wildly successful landing of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover on Aug. 6, 2012, it may come as no surprise that the American public are currently feeling rather enthusiastic about exploring Mars. This sentiment has now been bolstered by a recent poll carried out for the non-profit corporation Explore Mars by the global communications company Phillips & Company. After surveying 1,101 people, 71 percent of the participants said they feel confident the U.S. will land a human on Mars within the next two decades. Read more.

От автора: Меня зовут Александр. Я проживаю в городе Новосибирске и работаю в IT-компании. Фотографией увлекаюсь примерно с 2007–2008 года. Но тогда я снимал на компакт-мыльницу, плёночный фотоаппарат, и даже телефон… Где-то в 2010 году я таки купил уже более-менее серьёзную камеру и перешел, так сказать, на “уровень повыше” :) Снимаю в основном урбанистические и индустриальные пейзажи. Также с детства люблю заброшенные места…
В Tumblr попал года 2 назад (на фоне постоянных падений ЖЖ), ну и вообще захотелось чего-то нового. Сначала долго не мог разобраться, но потом постепенно освоился.

Какие функции Tumblr Вы используете чаще всего?

Так как я публикую в основном фотографии, то пользуюсь фотопостами. Регулярно пишу большие фотоотчёты, соответственно использую текстовые посты в которые вставляю фотографии. Ещё иногда публикую музыку и пользуюсь аудиопостами.
Часто пользуюсь хештегами, то есть, например, люблю почитать хештеги #animals #cityscape #novosibirsk

Что Вам нравится в Tumblr? Что хотелось бы изменить?

Нравится простота, например, чтобы опубликовать фотографию — достаточно пары кликов. Так же нравятся большие возможности в плане кастомизации. Я могу полностью сам написать дизайн своего блога, используя HTML и CSS разметку, а также вставлять JavaScript код.
Хороший текстовый редактор с возможностью редактировать в режиме HTML, очень помогает когда пишешь длинный пост. Ну и вообще Tumblr постоянно развивается, что есть хорошо. Ещё нравится функция отложенных записей, иногда ставлю несколько постов в очередь, чтобы они автоматически публиковались в так называемый prime-time.
С недавнего времени в Tumblr, помимо reblog и like, появилась функция reply. Но она очень ограничена, например нельзя оставить комментарий, находясь на странице поста (оставить reply можно только просматривая свою ленту), также нельзя написать ответ на комментарий. То есть я понимаю, что система комментариев в Тумблере никогда не была в приоритете, но уж если сделали, то надо бы сделать до конца :)

Какие блоги Tumblr Вы хотели бы порекомендовать своим читателям?

Если честно, я редко читаю свою ленту, потому что у меня там нет реальных друзей и вообще мало русскоязычных френдов…
Но иногда захожу, например, в эти блоги:
POINTLESS THOUGHTS — девушка из соседнего города Барнаула, иногда пишет про сам город, иногда про себя.
Виды Москвы —  красивые виды Москвы.
